UTTAR PRADESH-Struggle for Employment of Villagers of Naini
during the last year.
Lastly, the price indices do not fully reflect the pressure on commodity prices. Despite some absolute fall in the wholesale price indices of cereals and pulses during the last year, the consumer price index for industrial workers (base 1960=100) shows a rise of over 2 per cent (as at end-January 1979). Between March 1976 and January 1979, the consumer price index has recorded a rise of 46 points, from 286 to '332. Likewise, the urban non-manual employees' index (base 1960=100) also increased by 43 points from 265 in March 1976 to 308 in December 1978. The Economic Times retail price index for Greater Bombay (base 1869-70= 100) rose from 175.9 in March 1976 to 217.2 in March 1979 or by an annual average of 7 per cent. The general impression of price stability is thus on the whole false.
