Aligarh Riots

FOR over six weeks now, Aligarh has been under intermittent curfew. Even by official admission, about 30 persons have been killed in riots involving Hindus and Muslims with Muslims for the most part at the receiving end. A notable feature of these incidents has been the very active role played by the police, especially the UP Provincial Armed Constabulary, the officials, and the politicians. The virulence of communal hatred certainly has been fed by the ongoing struggles in the Janata Party, for nothing else can explain the truly extraordinary official and political reaction to the horrid events that began on October 5, seemed to have been brought under control soon there- after, only to break forth again even more viciously earlier this month, and to which there may yet be a sequel.
