Waiting for Intelligent Direction Romesh Thapar FRANKLY, the earlier euphoria and counter euphoria over Chikmagalur is indicative of our political malaise. Apart from the excitement that by-elections offer, and the money that pours into the constituency (estimated at Chikmagalur to have touched Rs one crore !), what we should be concerned about is whether any major shifts are taking place in political power and alignment. Chikmagalur shows that Chief Minister Urs continues in command of his bases despite the energetic campaigning of Ceorge Fernandes. What is more, Indira Gandhi's 'charisma' is not what it used to be. Her vote-pulling is about the same as the non-descript gentleman who gave up his safe seat.
