Growth and Instability in Crop Output in Eastern India Purnendu Sekhar Das The purpose of the present paper is two-fold. First, in Section I it statistically examines whether there has been acceleration, deceleration, or stagnancy of the growth rates in crop output in Assam, Bihar, Orissa, and West Bengal, during 1950-51 to 1973-74. Secondly, it attempts to ascertain the nature and ex- tent of instability in both foodgrains production and total agricultural production in these states, and examines the impact of the so-called Green Revolution on the instability or otherwise of foodgrains production in these states. This is done in Section II.
