NEW DELHI-Putting the Plan to Sleep

NEW DELHI Putting the Plan to Sleep BM BOTH Finance Minister H M Patel and Planning Commission Member Raj Krishna struck a high note of optimism at a mid-year review of the economy organised by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry early this month. They contended that production and investment in agriculture and industry, in the private and public sectors, had moved up in the last year. Also that the tempo would be kept up in the current year. Raj Krishna went to the extent of suggesting that the present methods of collecting statistics axe faulty, not fully reflecting the ievements made. According to him, a large number of new jobs have been generated in the last year when agricultural production made a new record with over two million hectares of new land brought under irrigation and several ether connected developments. He was clearly trying to refute the contention of many economists who question the employment-generation estimates of the draft Sixth Plan.
