NEW DELHI-Sugar Industry vs Cane-Grower
THE normal work of the government and administration. has been practically at a standstill in the last couple of weeks with attention focused almost wholly on the crisis in the ruling party. What the final upshot of the factional tussle in the Janata party will be is still not quite clear. Even so, the Union Cabinet found time to discuss the so-called glut in sugar and the need to do something about it to relieve the alleged distress that overproduction of sugar has caused to the cane-grower and the sugar industry. Sub-committee of the Cabinet was set up last week to review the situation and formulate the sugar policy for the 1978-79 sugar year. That the pro- blem is being taken very seriously can be seen from the fact that the subcommittee consists of as many as seven Cabinet ministers.
