NELCOs Breakthrough in Thyristor Controlled Drives

NATIONAL RADIO AND ELECTRO-NICS (NELCO), a Tata company, claims to have engineered a revolution in DC motor drive technology by successfully commissioning the largest indigenous thyristor controlled drive (TCD) at the steel rolling mill of Durgapur steel plant. The contract had been awarded to Nelco on very challenging terms, involving a penalty or bonus of Rs 50,000 per day in order to minimise the production loss worth lakhs of rupees due to stoppage of the running mill. The job was to replace the im-ported mercury are rectifiers by indi-genous thyristor converters. The original equipment had been imported from General Electric of UK.
