Left Academicians and Writing of Indian History [IIIS is apropos of the letter of some members of the Centre for Historical Studies (CHS) of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Bipan Chandra's 'Devaluation: Of What and By Whom?" in your issues of April 29 and May 6, 1978. It appears that like he old Brahmanical edict banning Shudras from any access to the Vedas, a new law is in the offing denying persons like me who have (to quote Bipan Chandra) "no visible accomp- plishment in historical research or writing' any right to question the ws of Susobhan Sarkar or R P Dutt. arrogating to himself and the circle of the initiated few the Sole right of a Marxist interpretation of Indian history, Bipan Chandra is only lending credence to the criticism I had made earlier in my article about the "bureaucratic" attitude of Leftist academicians in positions of power.
