For this small mercy, the consumer has to thank the weather which has made possible a bumper sugarcane harvest. Ever since the beginning of the current season, the industry has been shouting that there will be record sugar production this year and that to avoid a crisis in the industry as well as among sugarcane growers the government should cut excise duty and liberalise credit to enable the industry to carry very heavy stocks. On May 3, the industry announced that sugar production in the current season would amount to 6 million tonnes. It seems to have thus deliberately raised its earlier estimate by more than half a million tonnes. According to its estimates, during the half year October 1977 to March 1978, the country had produced 4.5 million tonnes, i e, 345,000 tonnes more than in the corresponding period of the previous season. Stocks with factories at the end of March were 3.9 million tonnes or a million tonnes more than a year ago.
