CHINA Meeting Natural Calamities Narendra Singh ON February 4, 1975, a major earthquake (7.3 on the Richter Scale) occurred in the Haicheng-Yingkon area of the Liaoning province. This quake was well anticipated and, therefore, most of the heavily populated areas had been evacuated in advance.. The violent earthquake caused great cracks in the) ground, lour kilometres long across the countryside, and a very large? number of houses crumbled; yet no one was hurt, except two small boys hit by pieces of flying debris, and none of the farm stock was lost.
