People's Protest against Police Brutality THE disclosures of 'Emergency excesses' have shown how arrest, torture and murder, suitably dressed up to look like deaths in so-called 'encounters', were used to deal with the opposition to the regime. But police brutality was not a feature of the Emergency alone. It is the normal method of functioning of the police. Of course, not all classes of people are treated in this way; such treatment is mostly reserved for the poor. The threat of arrest is used to extort money. So- called interrogation is nothing but the beating up of those arrested. Raping of women is commonplace. These police methods were there before the Emergency and they continue to exist now. So long as the present class society continues. the police is bound to act in this manner to maintain the 'normal' terror over the oppressed classes.
