LABOUR-Railway Workers Prepare for Struggle

Railway Workers Prepare for Struggle MASSIVE rallies of railwaymen have been recently held at Delhi and other places to reiterate the demands of the 1974 strike. On the question of bonus, particularly, the railway workers have been feeling both cheated and insulted. The Janata party's Lok Sabha election manifesto had accepted that bonus was a deferred wage. Bonus then is meant to provide an additional month's income to enable some annual purchases, like those of clothes, to be made. This need of a deferred wage is not unique to those classified as industrial workers and even less to those employed in units which have made book profits. This deferred wage is necessary for all wage-earners irrespective of sector or profit. The acceptance by the Janata party of bonus as a deferred wage, naturally led to the expectation that, with the people rising to overwhelmingly defeat the Congress, the new Janata party government would recognise the right of railway workers too to bonus.
