December 17, 1977 PAKISTAN Suppression of Trade Unions under Martial Law WITHIN a few days of the imposition of Martial Law in Pakistan on July 5, 1977 specific orders and regulations relating to the activities of the working class were issued. As a result of these orders and regulations, many of the rights and privileges gained by the working class through trade union struggles and strikes have been severely undermined. The following account of the labour situation in Pakistan under martial law is taken from the September-October 1977 issue of Pakistan Progressive, published by the Organisation of Progressive Pakistanis, New York, USA.
