December 3, 1977 MAHARASHTRA Marathi Sahitya Sammelan Gail Omvedt THE seeds of confrontation were there from the beginning: a literary conference at a site named by its organisers 'Mahatma Phule Nagar' after the radical aniti-Brahman social reformer; blazoning its display to the surrounding road with all the garishness,, coloured lights and silk characteristic of an upper class Hindu wedding; and presided over by a conservative Brahman writer arguing that literature must uphold the very values that Phule attacked. In fact, the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan ended in an uproar on November 20, when the usual process of poetry reading, play viewing and congratulatory speech-making was disrupted by masses of angry youth surging onto the stages, demanding apologies for the "insult to Dalit literature'' and for the upholding of caste values.
