COMMUNIST parties do not normally change their secretaries between one congress and another except on grounds of the incumbent's health or when political differences are sharp and a shift in the line is in the offing; and the timing and the circumstances of the replacement of P Sundarayya by E M S Namboodiripad as general secretary of the CPI(M) cannot but be seen as an indication of differences within the party's leadership.
