TO mark its eleventh annual general meeting, the Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) has published a pamphlet called "Focus on Pharmaceuticals". In this publication there is an article under the heading "A Profile of Indian Pharmaceutical Industry''[1]. This article Has been reworded as the presidential speech delivered at its Annual General meeting [2], The President was made to say what his predecessors have been saying year alter year. Here is one sample: "Our membership comprises purely Indian companies and companies with foreign collaboration." The facts are: This country has 2,900 pharmaceutical units [3] with 125 of them in the 'organised sector' [1], Out of these 125, 55 are members of OPPI [4]. Out of these 55, as many as 34 have foreign collaboration. Nearly all the multinational pharmaceutical houses functioning in this country are members of OPPI. OPPI is thus essentially an organisation of multinational pharmaceutical concerns. There is nothing wrong with this, but it is just as well to recognise it.
