Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Among the few straight fights in Punjab, is the one in Gidarbaha area, from where the state's prospective Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, is standing. He is switching over from the Centre to his home state to lead the Akali party. The party is contesting 68 seats following an agreement with the Janata party which has been allotted a quota of 40 seats, while the third partner, the CPM, has received nine. The Akalis can, on their own strength, constitute a ministry in the state, but a respectable representation has to be conceded to the Janata party and a token one to the tiny Marxist unit.
