University Act to remove this lacuna". This will bring small comfort to those who have been jobless for the past several months.
Most important from the long-term point of view, the teachers got no satisfaction at all in respect of the impending demotion and perhaps even loss of job facing a large number of them from the next academic year. The suggestions made by the teachers' organis- tions in this respect, such as a common cadre of teachers for both junior colleges and degree colleges, reduction in work-load, etc, are to be taken up later. However, many teachers have already received notices of termination or demotion and by the time the negotiations reopen, it is more than likely that a good many of the teachers will already have lost their present jobs. As in the case of teachers already retrenched, it will be far more difficult to get any hearing from the authorities ex post facto. Moreover, once the separation of the college teachers into those in junior colleges and those in the degree colleges is completed, each of these groups of teachers will have much less bargaining strength with the authorities. This is inevitably going to weaken the teachers' movement in the state and in the country.
