UNIVERSAL STEEL AND ALLOYS' working results in the year ended April last highlight the problems faced by the mini-steel plants, which are still unable to operate on an economic basis. The directors say that reduction in excise duty by about Rs 150 per tonne on steel ingots produced by these plants announced by government in December 1975 has been offset by the fall in prices of end-products and rise in prices of steel scrap by Rs 150 to lis 200 per tonne.
