Portugal- Setback for the Revolution

Spain THE sense of revulsion all over the world at the Franco regime's murder of five Leftist revolutionaries has been so strong that even most of the governments of Western Europe have been forced to make gestures of protest. Fifteen countries have temporarily withdrawn their ambassadors from Madrid "for consultations''. However, the United States' has chosen precisely this moment to arrive at an agreement with the Spanish dictator over a new treaty of friendship and co-operation. The Franco regime's exhilaration at this open show of US support has been ill- concealed. Thus Franco's Foreign Minister, Pedro Cortina, exclaimed on his return from the United States : "This confirmation of friendship has come at a moment of extraordinary importance*'. He also praised the US for its policy of "non-interference in Spain's internal affairs".
