An economically resurgent Egypt might no longer be deferential to Arab kings and assorted Sheiks. To retain their influence in the region, the government of Saudi Arabia need not then be averse from taking recourse to desperate measures. All kinds of strange alliances might be struck; socialist Algeria could come to terms with feudal Saudi Arabia, and revolution-mongering Gaddafi might be teaming up with America-loving Hussein, all united by their common dislike of Sadat's overbearingness. The turbulent saga of the Middle East is thus hardly ended.
