LABOUR- Avoidable Confrontation

Avoidable Confrontation VOLTAS is probably the only large- sized firm in Bombay to have declared a major lay-off or partial lock-out after the declaration of the emergency. About 80 per cent of the total activity and a very large proportion of the earnings of Voltas are accounted for by the marketing of consumer products and agricultural machinery. Manufacturing by the company, very importantly of air-conditioners, accounts for only about 20 per cent of its total activity. The company's manufacturing and repairs and servicing plants are located at Thana and Chinchpokli and employ approximately 2,500 and 1,300 workers, respectively.
