Portugal- Worsening Crisis

debating hall to lay barricades across streets, the situation in Portugal is fast reaching the flash-point. The crisis began last month when the Armed Forces Movement (AFM) announced its new programme of direct democracy under which it is proposed to set up grassroot organisations of military men and non-party persons as the basis for the future government of the country. This evidently displeased the Socialist Party and the People's Democratic Party who. saw in it a sinister move by the AFM to deny them the fruits of their election victory. In protest they left the fourth coalition, which was later dissolved by the AFM. The only political party which now stands by the AFM is the Communist Party which ha' begun to organise counter-rallies to, meet the threats from the Socialists and .the Democrats.
