V SHANKAR's reminiscences of Sardar Patel come at a time when the problem of power has grown paramount in the politics of our country. Any substantial biography of the 'Iron Man of India' therefore holds a special interest today, yet Shankar's account does not quite succeed in exploiting this interest.
