 EVIDENCE of the barbaric treatment of so-called 'Naxalite' suspects by the police continues to pile up. A ghastly account of how women detenus are subjected to the most savage torture has recently been provided by members of the All-India Women's Association. The Association has no particular pro- ' Naxalite' sympathies and in fact it was by sheer accident that some of its members got to know of the police treatment of women 'Naxalite' suspects. On May 3, some members of the Association were arrested in connection with the anti-price rise demonstrations organised by nine Left parties in Calcutta. Because of overcrowding, some of the arrested were kept in a cell in the Calcutta Presidency Jail close to the women 'Naxalites'.
