castes, This well dried up two months ago, forcing the scheduled castes to turn to the other well for water. The Kanbi Patels resented this though, unlike the scheduled castes who are entirely dependent on the village well, they have available to them a number of farm wells to draw water from. The Kanbi Patels have no special rights over the village well and, in fact, it is illegal to prevent use of village wells by anyone. Yet this is precisely what the Kanbi Patels tried to do. Early attempts by the scheduled castes to use the well resulted in scuffles with the Patels and it is very likely that had the scheduled castes not organised themselves to resist the Patels they would not have been able to use the well. Significantly, Devji Dahya, one of the two victims of the attack by the Patels on June 22, played the leading role in organising the scheduled castes. Faced with the Patels' refusal to let the scheduled castes use the well, Dahya had lodged complaints with the police. Some Kanbi Patels were arrested as a result, though only to be released on bail immediately.
