OFFSHORE EXPLORATION THE government has announced the signing of contracts with two foreign oil companies for offshore exploration and production of petroleum in the Bengal and Kutch basins. These two companies, we are told, were picked out of some 40 parties which had shown, interest in offshore exploration. One need not contest the government's claim that the two US firms, viz, Carlsberg and Reading and Bates Oil and Gas Company, have considerable expertise in onshore as well as offshore exploration and that they are very well suited for the job. But it is worth examining whether the government has got as good terms from these companies as it claims to have.
