Irrelevance of Licensing

Irrelevance of Licensing Hansavivek ELECTRIC CONSTRUCTION AND EQUIPMENTS installed capacity, as revealed in the latest annual report, far exceeds the licensed capacity in respect of a number of items, as the following figures .show (the licensed capacities are given in brackets): single phase meters 3,00,000 (1,80,000); poly phase meters 1,50,000 (54,000); trans- formers 10,50,000 KVA (7,50,000 kVA); electric motors and pumps 3,36,000 HP (2,88,000 IIP); lifts and industrial lift- ing platforms 500 (280). The installed capacities of fractional and rayon pot motors and welding transformers are stated to be "under assessment'' and of starters, switches and cut-outs "under re-asscssment". Even the figures of licensed arid installed capacity given in the report are not precise, for a note appended to the table says that in cases where licences were not available or did not indicate quantities, the licensed capacity has been given on the basis of applications/returns to the government and relevant correspondence. The company began trial production of GLS lamps and fluorescent tubes during the latter half of last year. The licensed and installed capacities are 6 million and 1 million, respectively. Production during 1972-73 was only 0.13 million GLS lamps. Installed capacities of both the items are expected to be reached this year.
