nomination approved by the Central Parliamentary Board. On his return to Bombay, Sawant, Vasantrao Patil and Mohite threatened the Chief Minister with a revolt in the Congress Legislature Party. They also informed the Prime Minister that if Naik insisted on Tirpude's nomination, he would have to face not only the possible defeat of Tirpude in the election but also a split in the hitherto united Congress party in Maharashtra. The Prime Minister, never very favourably disposed to Naik, asked the Congress President, Shankar Dayal Sharrna, to cancel Tirpude's nomination.
