December 15, 1973 Calcutta Diary AM WHAT has happened has happened; history is is reversible. Retrospective second thoughts, there can be no question, can often prove to be an irritant. And this is not the first time that entire papulations have been taken for a ride. During this week, when newspaper editorials will go into raptures over the second anniversary of the emergence of Bangladesh, one nonetheless owes it to oneself to do sonic modest stocktaking. History is of course not reversible, hut, precisely on account of that, those who, whether they like it or not, are enmeshed in its process should better learn from the miscalculations and blunders of the past : merely because a group of confidence-tricksters have triumphed in one corner of the globe, there is no particular reason for pampering similar groups elsewhere too.
