It may be recalled that in October 1972 the government had estimated likely production in the season at 4 mn tonnes. The industry had considered this an overestimate and had placed the figure at 3.6 mn tonnes. Later, against the background of the failure of foodgrains production, the government had scaled down its estimate to 3.6 mn tonnes in November, whereas the industry had drastically slashed it to 3 mn tonnes. However, production had exceeded 3.3 mn tonnes by the end of March 1973. So the industry revised its estimate for the season to 3.6 mn tonnes. Now even this mark has been surpassed.
