NORTH-Land Grabbers

NORTH Land Grabbers THE official committee of eight Punjab MLAs, presided over by Harchand Singh (Congress) has listed dozens of "influential persons" who have acquired land through dubious transactions with the connivance of key officials. The Committee, comprising six Congressmen, a CPI legislator and an Akali, submitted its report to the state government early this month. Many of the "land grabbers" have already disposed of the property, netting tidy sums in the process. Among the politicians exposed by the committee are present and former Ministers, ruling party legislators, IAS, PCS and Police officers, including members of Scheduled Castes, two sub-judges and some non-Congress politicians, notably a senior CPM leader. According to the committee's 200-page report, many of the land grabbers have acquired large farms by exploiting their positions and deceiving others. The Committee has also pointed out that some influential persons had bought land in open auctions "because the law was defective"; their responsibility, in the committees' view, was only moral because they had misused their political influence.
