ABOUT 42 per cent of the nation's food comes from the areas commonly termed 'dry lands' comprising about 47 million hectares or nearly 36 per cent of the net area sown. In these regions, mon-soon rains are not only meagre (40 to 100 cms annually) but also extremely erratic as to their onset, amount, fre-quency, duration and cessation.
