January 13, 1973 The second question was answered by 143 students. Of these 58 per cent feIt that the police was an instrument for maintaining peace and it should perforin this duty well. But its continuous use of violent methods only helped to aggravate the situation. These students said that if the police was just and made the students believe that it was so, then it would be far more influential in keeping the peace. As one student said, "Co-operation must be elicited from the students and persuasion is the only method by which lasting peace can come to the campus". Only 17.4 per cent of the .students felt that coercive measures should be used when peaceful methods have failed.
