Nimbly, into Other Pastures Hansavivek INDIA TOBACCO intends to diversify its activities, particularly in areas with a large foreign exchange earning potential. Negotiations with the Government are going on in this regard. The company is also intensifying its efforts at non-traditional export, which last year reached Rs 233 lakhs against only Rs 17 lakhs in the preceding year. Apart from completing the large order for cigarettes from the USSR, ITC also secured a sizeable order from Hungary, where Indian cigarettes have gained entry for the first time. A major breakthrough in exports was achieved, moreover, when the company signed a contract with Sudan for Rs 50 lakhs worth of manufactured cut 'rag' and printed packaging, previously imported by that country from the UK. The company also undertook a programme for diversifying exports, other than tobacco products, in the field of non-traditional items. Last year, the value of such exports alone aggregated Rs 84 lakhs.
