Who Won in West Bengal

Who Won in West Bengal? APROPOS Mohit Sen's learned discourse June 10, p 1134) on the 'basic mistakes' of the CPM and the Naxalites, I would leave readers with allegiance to either of the two to learn from him if they would care to. I would only point out that before comparing the record of the Naxalites in the matter of underground organisation with that of the CPI "in the late thirties and in the 1948-51 period" one should make fair allowance for the differences in the circumstances. In those earlier periods the CPI had to contend with only the police. It did not have to contend with one large party, calling itself a Communist Party, that had appointed .itself as an agent of the ruling class and another large party, also calling itself a Communist Party, which had made the killing of Naxalite cadres and helping the police to hound them as one of its declared aims.
