Zip Fasteners

THE zip fastener industry complains that prices of indigenous zippers have gone up on account of the excise levy of 20 per cent and sales-tax of 6 per cent With the increase in selling prices of indigenous products, the market is flooded with surreptitious imports and imports against actual consumer licences. The imported zippers are sold at "in-ordinately low prices", because they do not bear the excise duty or the sales-tax. This has led to accumulation of unsold stocks with the industry, curtailment of production and lay-off of workmen who, if the situation does not improve, would have to be retrenched.
