Untoppled Statues THE DMK's penchant for statues has by now become a well-worn joke. But that has not caused any change in the party's governing style. Statues have a permanent visual impact. In a more immediate sense, they also provide occasion, at unveiling ceremonies, for a reiteration of the ruling party's commitment to Tamil culture, often against heavy odds.
