survive in the market. Steel and engineering account for a total of 2109 points of weightage in the industrial production index. The largest extent of unutilised capacity exists, significantly, in steel-using industries, mainly castings, structurals, machine- tools, transport equipment (railway wagons) and diesel engines, among others. Among the major engineering industries which have shown declines in output so far in 1971 (as compared to the corresponding period of 1970) are steel pipes and tubes, steel castings, diesel engines and power-driven pumps, electric motors and cranes.
