Above all, Bangla Desh poses such a grave challenge to India that it can have no such foreign policy as defeats its objective of ensuring a satisfactory solution of the problem there. It is not the clamouring of the traditional friends of China who have made a difference to the official policy but the inability of the Indian Government to sustain its old attitudes to China in the face of these grim realities.
