Amul-Co-operative Success Story

November 13, 1971 SUGAR prices have moved up with the be-ginning of the new season. The 1970-71 season ended with prices around Rs 185 per bag; at the time of writing, prices have touched Rs 212 and traders believe that prices will go up further. By the end of 1971 prices are expected to touch Rs 240 per bag. The cavalier fashion in which Govern went is handling the industry is amazing. Final figures of area under sugarcane and sugarcane production for the 1970-71 .season have not been published yet. If the industry has to be competently handled, the first forecast of area under sugarcane for the current season should be issued before Octobci every year; and the final foreca- must be issued before the monsoon begins. But no expert body has bothered about this so far. As is well known, sugar statistics are not issued by Government but by the industry which issues them as and when it suits it. Statistics for July were issued on September 27, for August on October 12 and for the, entire season on Novem ber 6. Industry must be compelled to issue these figures within two to three weeks of the end of the month.
