Moinul Chaudhury gave a figure of 167 while, according to L N Mishra. only 121 joint ventures had been approved by the Government, of which 27 had gone into production and 61 were at various stages of implementation. The remaining 23 proposals had been abandoned due to various reasons. As for remittances into India from the earnings of these ventures, whereas Moinul Chaudhury alleged that there had been practically no remittances, other estimates put the remittances variously between Rs 83 lakhs and Rs 1.6 crores. Perturbed by Moinul Chau- dhury's statement, the FICCI is reported to have initiated a study to ascertain the facts about Indian joint ventures abroad. This attempt is in keeping with the anxiety of the new office bearers of FICCI to improve the 'image' of the business community.
