the circumstances, Jan Sangh is likely to be the gainer and any losses will be borne mainly by Swatantra and Congress(O). After its consistently dismal performance in by-elections and the hard knocks that it has taken recently in Gujarat and Mysore, the two States where it was considered relatively unassailable, it will surprise no one if a poll to the Lok Sabha reduces Congress(O) to a minor party in Parliament. This would leave Congress( R) more or less as the sole occupant of the wide central spaces of Indian politics. If in the process Jan Sangh wins a few more seats it would not matter much since it would still remain basically a regional party of the north.
