December 26, 1970 R and D in Industry (From a Special Correspondent) PRIME MINISTER Nehru saw very clearly that science and technology were essential for ensuring economic growth. With his support many scientific laboratories were established in this country even as early as 1947. These have grown in size and also in number under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). These laboratories were ostensibly aimed at establishing a sound technological base for Indian industries. Simultaneously research in Atomic Energy and in Defence have also increased substantial The national expenditure on R and D has also'grown considerably from Rs 27 crores in 1958-59 to Rs 135 crores in 1969-70.
