The social and political problems of modern Fiji, which became independent on October 10, are invariably phrased in terms of confrontation between the Indian and Fijian communities. The basic assumption underlying this approach is that each ethnic community, and particularly the Indian com- munity, is solidly united because it faces its own unique problems.
