The Relevance of Non-Alignment A K Essack ALTHOUGH Tanzania played host to the preparatory meeting of the non- aligned countries earlier this year, and although its President gave a reasoned and logical exposition defending non- alignment, it was soon evident that he was not able to convince all the country's intellectuals about its relevance. Controversy broke out and the Nationalist, official organ of the ruling TANU (Tanganyika African National Union) party, opened its columns and invited supporters and critics of non-alignment to present their views.
