emergence as a Super Power : its role as a check and a challenge to Soviet Union in Asia. This potential role of China's is of importance to a United States that is no longer confident that it can sustain its presence on mainland Asia. It would be surprising if the Russians do not likewise see some positive aspects to China's rise to power. To the extent that China is helping to end American dominance over Asia, Moscow has no reason to regard the growth of Chinese influence as an unmixed evil. But more important than their recognition of the positive aspects of China's emergence as a Super Power is their realistic acceptance that there is no alternative to co-existence with China. Given this situation, the two Super Powers have necessarily to prepare themselves for a dialogue with China and to gradually adjust themselves to the evolution of a new triangular power balance in the world.
