Iravati Karve THE sudden death of Iravati Karve is a shock to her academic friends and close associates. It was a joy to be with her. She was a delightful talker and conversed on all subjects with autho- rity and involvement. She enriched her anthropological and literary writings by synthesising in a unique way the objectivity of the scientist and the emo- tional fervour of the litterateur. From the day I came in personal contact with her about ten years back, I had quite a few occasions to have an intimate glimpse of her personality. Her house, her style of life, her way of looking at things and persons, were expressive of a unique combination of simplicity and elegance.
