More Imports

More Imports? THERE is very little to report on cotton. Inordinate delay in importing PL 480 cotton and staple fibre has aggravated the scarcity psychology. Since there has been very little cotton on offer, turnover has been restricted. Prices have hardened further. Thanks to continued good demand for cloth and yarn, industry is not seriously bothered about soaring cotton prices. If it were, it would have thought of self- regulatory measures to restrict consumption in order to check the rising trend in cotton prices. But what can one expect of the Indian Cotton Mills' Federation which cannot check even clandestine deals in foreign cotton which is allocated on the basis of spindles and is meant for self-consumption only. The Federation's letters asking mills to surrender their unused quotas have proved to be of no avail but no action is known to have been taken against the erring mills.
