More Political than Suspected
November 16, 1968 EVEN before the attempt on President Ayub Khan's life in Peshawar on Sunday, many of the bigger cities in West Pakistan had for days witnessed student-organised demonstrations. Such public defiance of the regime has been very uncommon in the Western wing of the country. The last time similar demonstrations were witnessed was over the Tashkent agreement. The reasons for the current wave of unrest are less specific. At some places students were defying a ban on assembling in large numbers to welcome former Foreign Minister Bhutto; at others they were agitating for removal of restrictions on engaging in political activity.
